EducationThe PRT difference

The goals of our Youth Theatre Workshops are to provide young people with tools for every day life, to inspire them to discover the talents that already exist and to take positive risks. We accomplish this through basic acting techniques specifically designed for youth. Our focus will be on different socialization skills, such as: making a positive first impression, how to work as a team, how to listen and observe, and the importance of resilience. Our students explore the world of theatre through movement, focus and concentration exercises that encourage them to communicate in new and creative ways. While the specific skills change each week, we always concentrate on reinforcing positive self-image and esteem, and reminding each student that their individuality, in and of itself, is their biggest gift. It is our hope that through our Youth Theatre Workshops we will inspire young people to recognize their own sense of self and inter-connectedness within the world at large.

All of our Youth Theatre Workshops seek to nurture the mind, body, and soul and in turn promote confidence, self-awareness, cooperative learning, discipline, enhanced self-esteem, and problem solving skills.

About Our Program

Because we value theatre as a powerful tool for developing self-expression, self-awareness, and team- work, the goal of all of our Youth Theatre Workshops is to empower the imaginations and enrich the lives of young people. We seek to expose as many young people as possible to the endless benefits of theatre. Students of all levels are welcome!

Young people have a great time bringing characters and stories to life from their imaginations while learning acting skills as well as life skills like cooperation, communication, leadership, being comfortable speaking in front of a group, and making their ideas a reality. Everyone participates and gets the chance to shine!

Our Methods

Our Youth Theatre Workshops are comprised of a wide variety of age-appropriate exercises and games which include: creative movement, structured improvisation, language development, scenes and monologues, stage makeup and application and end-of-the-class productions. Through these tools, students learn to be more self-confident, trusting, outgoing and comfortable in group situations. Patterson Rep prides itself on carefully planned lessons, which keep each session new and exciting for the students.

In all of our workshops and rehearsals, we teach the students through positive reinforcement and encouragement. We emphasize that as a member of our theatre, we are all to respect one another and to treat each other with kindness. We pride our theatre as being a "safe" place to explore ourselves and our imaginations without fear of being ridiculed. Our hope is that in addition to teaching young people the basics of theatre, we will also help improve their self-esteem and their ability to believe in themselves!
